This morning, Rex Tillerson, captain of the starship ExxonMobil, was talking about gas prices. “This is a demand-driven price run-up,” he said. Right. And his ledgerbook showed over $10 billion in profits last quarter – which is a three-month period of time, right?
Now, I’m not bashing ExxonMobil. They’re doing what they’re supposed to do: simply reacting to the effects of demand and the weak U.S. dollar. I pay $4.45 for a gallon of the good stuff, so I think I’ve got the right to my opinion. And personally, I think the threat of $5 – $8/gallon gas is going to finally change our habits and that’s just fine. Conder made a good point the other day: “Gas has been cheaper than Windex for a long time…”
But what’s this going to do to hotrodding? Gasoline literally powers our lifestyle and the motors we build ain’t necessarily sipping it slowly through a swizzle straw. Maybe this will all just make the life Full Custom even more precious. Maybe we’ll buy the hybrid and run our diesel pickups on french fry grease, but feel an even greater sense of satisfaction when we pull the hot rod out to fill it with $7/gallon hi-test.
Look, I’m a hotrodder. But I also can’t ignore all the world-wide factors that take $100 out of my pocket at the gas station. The sounds and smells of of an internal combustion engine on gas is what our lifestyle runs on. But maybe if the hot rods are the only things in the garage running on the stuff, it’ll just make it that much more special and valuable as the cultural movement it is.

One of the most important parts of our magazine is our imagery. And a large portion of that is photography. The photographers we trust to bring our stories to life are like family to us and we’ll be bringing each of them here to this blog for you to get to know a little better.
