  1. In issue #20 there was a letter in the mail slot about the Henry J. I know of this car too. It’s been 20 years since I had worked on it but it frequently shows up at the Battle Alley Car Show in Holly Michigan. The car does in fact have an incredible history … not to mention extensive surgery! Jerry the owner has an original Henry as well… talk about a cool car. In my opinion, the factory features rival the Tucker. The two Henrys look a lot alike when they’re apart. It is when they sit next to one another that you see what Mr. Waddill was accomplishing. As an example, Bill Waddill modified a VW Bug front axle to raise or lower the ride height without changing the spring rate. He shortened the wheelbase and channeled the body too. It currently looks like it belongs at Bonneville. This car is simple, clean and always has been one of my favorites. Should you want more information on this car and Mr. Waddill’s history you can contact Jerry Cole at Holly Auto.

The aforementioned letter from a local reader also got me reflecting on all the cars and great people that helped change the automotive hobby that we all love. From that reflection I remembered a guy by the name of Doc Watson that used to visit Jerry’s parts store. I hope I have the following information right; I’d hate to have the wrong facts and dishonor these deserving guys! I just heard in conversation that Doc was (not for certain) honored by GM this year at the Back to the Bricks event in Flint Michigan. I would guess it had something to do with the Hurst Oldsmobile but I’m not sure. He used to go to local racing events to help racers with shifter linkages. Doc is another guy that has a colorful story and a cool car collection to boot. Did you know that Doc designed the Jaws of Life (JAW = his initials)??? I didn’t either. Guess that’s why he is so humble. It sure would be nice to read the stories on these guys. It would be a shame to loose their stories. It’s these people, like Hardy Allen, that have made a difference to our culture even when they are behind the scenes too.

Look forward to more great reads!

    Thanx,
