Hanging With Mr. Williams

The reigning king of Low Brow art, Robert Williams, was in Oakland this weekend as a guest of Phil Linhares – chief curator of the Oakland Museum of CA – for the L.A. Paint exhibit. He spoke to a packed house on Sunday and we got the rare chance to sit down with him and his beautiful wife, Suzanne, yesterday amid his mind-blowing paintings to just catch up and chat…

See, the thing about Williams is this: if you’re a hotrodder or even remotely interested in car culture, you know his work: the painting, “Hot Rod Race” is a poster in every gearhead’s garage.

And if you’re a child of the Eighties, you were probably introduced to his work without even knowing it when Guns ‘N Roses debuted their album bearing the same name as his painting gracing the cover, “Appetite For Destruction.”

The controversy that came with that album is something that Robert’s been gleefully dealing with his entire career. And thank God for that. His art, as it deals with car culture, has been well documented, but you may not know how much art he’s created outside car culture – it’s an impressive body of work and we really got to dig into his love for turning the Abstract Impressionism movement on its ear, as well as being responsible for getting our culture recognized as a viable art movement.

There’s more to come with Robert, and we’ll be the ones to bring it to you. While we’re working on that, take a look at his website (here) – it’ll open your eyes, brother.
